As of yesterday, the American Jersey Cattle Association announced that Oomsdale Gordo Goldie Gratitude (DAM of BOSGANNON) is not pure Jersey.

THE FOLLOWING POINTS ARE MADE BY AJCA:
• The discovery that the ancestry of Oomsdale Gordo Goldie Gratitude 111224922 ("Gratitude") is not pure Jersey was made using genomic SNP technology. This new technology was implemented for Jersey genomic evaluations in 2009.
• The official method of the American Jersey Cattle Association for parentage verification is DNA-typing. This method was adopted in 2002 and replaced blood typing.
• Oomsdale Gordo Goldie Gratitude 111224922 was DNA-typed in 2002, along with her dam and maternal grand dam. The sire of record was dead and was not previously blood typed or DNA-typed. On the basis of its tests and available information, the testing laboratory found no conflicts with the AJCA recorded parentage.
• AJCA staff and AIPL research geneticists are working in cooperation to determine the correct parentage of Gratitude. The breeder of Gratitude has been very cooperative and diligent in reviewing and providing records extending for more than 15 years.
• Although Gratitude is dead and not available for genomic testing, AIPL research geneticists have been able to use the genomic information from her tested progeny to further their work. They have determined that the genome of Gratitude is 22.3% Holstein and the most likely source is a red-carrier Holstein bull.
• The AJCA Board of Directors was informed of the known facts in a conference call on February 12, 2010. They will continue to be apprised of facts as they emerge between now and March 13, 2010, when the Board will meet to receive a full report and consider official action.
• The National Association of Animal Breeders (AI industry) received notification of these discoveries from the AJCA Executive Secretary on February 12, 2010.
• Official notification to the AJCA membership, Jersey recording associations in other countries, and the industry at large has been made Monday, February 15, 2010.
On March 13 and 14, 2010, the AJCA Board of Directors will meet to determine action on how this situation will be handled.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BOSGANNON AND OTHER “GRATITUDE”-PROGENY IN AUSTRALIA?
• This means Gannon-progeny may no longer be registered as Full Pedigree. With many Gannon calves on the ground and many more pregnancies on the way this would affect many pedigree animals out there. With this in mind Jersey Australia has decided not to make any decision on this situation until a clear direction is given by the AJCA board of directors which we hope will be following a meeting 13th & 14th March 2010. The JA board will meet 16th & 17th March;
• Our supplier CRI have decided to stop all sales and marketing of GANNON till the AJCA-board meeting;
• BOS Trading has BOSGANNON semen available in Australia and we will continue to have him available. We will however make potential customers aware that his progeny may not be Full Pedigree;

WHY NOT CEASE MARKETING?
o This news affects the pedigree status of BOSGANNON. This is not a genetic defect or change of proof;
o Commercial farmers not registering their jerseys are not affected by this news. They used BOSGANNON because of his milk volume, Stature and Width. Since the bulls proof has not changed these are still his strengths
We will keep you informed about any further developments.
